At Image Science, we only use industry-trusted materials from brands like Hahnemühle, Ilford, Canson, and Epson, alongside precision-calibrated workflows, so that every print we produce is not just visually stunning - but made to last. We've been offering fine art printing services for over 20 years and have more experience to draw on than any other service in the country.

We were the first lab in Australia to be certified by both Hahnemühle and Ilford as fine art printing experts, and remain the only platinum certified studio in Australia.

Our Advantage

  • Beautiful, Archival Materials

At Image Science, we only use industry-trusted materials from brands like Hahnemühle and Ilford, alongside Epson UltraChrome pigment inks and precision-calibrated workflows, to ensure that every print we produce is not just visually stunning, but made to last.

These prints have been independently assessed as archival, with a lifespan ranging from 80 to several hundreds of years in proper storage.

Archival prints are not just about beauty, they’re about permanence. Whether you're an artist selling limited edition works, a photographer preparing a gallery show, or an illustrator creating heirloom-quality pieces, archival printing ensures your vision stands the test of time.

We take pride in getting your prints to you in the perfect condition and pack them as if they were our own.

We were the first fine art printing service in Australia to offer printing on a range of environmentally friendly papers from Hahnemühle. See below for information on these papers made from wonderful, ecologically friendly new materials - Bamboo and Hemp.

  • State-Of-The-Art Colour Management and Equipment

All of our machines and every step of our workflows are carefully and regularly calibrated, linearised, verified, and custom colour profiled to the highest and most stringent levels to ensure accurate, standardised, and consistent results that mean your prints are as close to your original as is possible every time.

From industry-standard Eizo monitors that are calibrated to closely match International Standard ISO12646, to the powerful and superb Serendipity Megarip RIP being at the heart of our CMS, to custom linearisations and carefully calibrated ink density limiting to ensure maximum shadow detail retention, to world-class bespoke ICC profiles created in collaboration with the legendary Les Walkling, every part of our printing process is designed specifically for the highest quality, best accuracy and most consistent results, so that you retain full control of the process and specification of the aesthetics of your file, and that you can be assured that our machines will faithfully and precisely reproduce the exact colour numbers in your file every time.

  • Industry-Certified Printing Experts

We were the first lab in Australia to be certified by both Hahnemühle and Ilford as fine art printing experts, and remain the only platinum certified studio in Australia.

Back in 2013 we were formally recognised for our excellence in colour management, process control, and fine art printing - and were selected as the very first Ilford Australia Certified Printing Partner.

Also, through the Hahnemühle Certified Studio program, not only were we the first print studio in Australia to be awarded Platinum status, we were the third studio in the entire world to be given this title - so we can state with confidence that we are one of the top fine art print studios worldwide, with our knowledge and expertise backed by a global industry leader in digital inkjet fine art printing.

  • Over 20 Years of Fine Art Printing Experience

Our intention is still the same as when we started - to provide a superb and accessible archival printing service to artists, photographers and designers. Right from day one, colour management has been at the core of our work, which has allowed us to still be printing edition runs for artists 10 years after the initial print.

  • Friendly Advice and Competitive Pricing

We understand the challenges of being a creative professional and offer very competitive pricing to allow you to get the best quality fine art prints at an affordable and sustainable cost. We are always willing to help and happy to offer individual tutorials, assist with any technical difficulties and of course provide friendly advice on printing, sales, shipping, packaging, mounting and exhibitions.

  • Trusted by Artists and Galleries

Our work has been exhibited in many galleries in Australia and all over the world. We print for many well recognised Australian artists including cartoonists like Michael Leuing and Alex Stitt, photographers like Jason Edwards, oil painters like Jeremy Geddes and Ross Watson. We also enjoy working with up and coming artists and beginners of all levels. Our clients are diverse with some selling their prints for $50 on Etsy, and others selling limited edition prints for over $5000 to art collectors around the world.

  • How It Works

It's a simple three step process:

    1. File Setup

Make sure your files are formatted correctly - prepare them to our specifications with our easy to use downloadable templates.

    2. Send Us Your Files

Send Us Files using our file uploader - this is a separate process to making your order.

    3. Place Order Online

Place your order online with our user friendly ordering interface that allows you to include comments as you go.

    Done!

When we receive your files and your online order we start printing. Our turnaround times are normally 2-3 business days, but may be longer based on our current workload.

Once your order has been completed it will be carefully packed in archival wrapping. You will be notified that your fine art prints are ready to collect or have been posted.

To keep things simple, we have just one price for each print size, regardless of the material you choose to print on.

  • We have three file setup options to choose from:

  • 1. Self Setup

You can setup your images yourself. Make sure you're across How to Prepare Files For Printing at Image Science - we require files to be supplied already setup and laid out as per those specifications. We have downloadable templates to make this easy. This is our recommendation.

  • 2. Automatic Best Fit

We can setup files to 'best fit' within the safe printable area free of charge. This means we'll take your whole image and automatically size it to print as large as possible within the safe printable areas on your ordered size/s. This will not stretch/distort or clip your image in any way, and is the quickest option. However being automatic the result may not be precisely what you are expecting - particularly regarding the exact dimensions of ink on the page and the white space around your print.

  • 3. File Setup Service

If you have specific image size, layout or border width requirements outside of our automatic 'best fit' layout and don't want to do the setup yourself we offer a file setup service for a small fee. You can send us the largest version of the file(s) you have, and very clear instructions, and we can do the file setup for you (+$5 per file/per setup) - added using the 'Add File Setup Fee' button on the order page. One $5 setup fee is required per file/layout.

  • Please indicate in your order or file upload which option you want.

If you do not follow these instructions (or use our file setup service), your order will experience delays, as we will have to contact you.

  • Do your offer borderless / full bleed printing?

Unfortunately full bleed/borderless is not something that our printers can physically do.

Essentially to order a full bleed (for example as an A3), you have to in fact order a paper size up (so A3+), and then trim back to A3 size (we can do this for you, although very often the framer can do it too).

Due to the very nature of the pigment ink printing process, full bleed means a print is much much more damageable, as the ink is right up against the edge they effectively cannot be touched or handled without extreme risk of damage or lifting of ink, as such we don't really recommend it unless you really need to.

If you would like us to trim we do require you to add a specific type of crop marks/trim lines to your prints - we do not just accept instructions like 'trim 3cm off the left' or ‘trim to 20x30cm’ as this takes significant extra time and we tend to be very busy here, and it also avoids any chance of misinterpretation of your instructions.  If you are unable to add these, we can add them for you for our standard file set-up fee ($5).

  • Do you offer a print trimming service?

We are happy to offer simple trimming free of charge.

Simple trimming is trimming of one image, to size (i.e. up to 4 cuts).

The caveat for this service being free is that customers must supply their file with our recommended trim marks as per our instructions for this, and not just the default Photoshop (or whatever) marks.

Also note that we can't accept instructions like 'trim 3cm off the left' or ‘tri to 20x30cm’ as this requires a lot more time on our part for the measuring etc.

If you are unable to add these, we can add them for you for our standard file set-up fee ($5).

More complex trimming (i.e. multiple images from a roll print, or things precise or exotic) - we do not offer as a service. You will want to get your framer to use their more precise tools for this sort of work.

It's worth noting, though, that our trimmer is not as good or as millimetre accurate as the machines framers use - so we strongly recommend you have your framer trim the prints. We will do our best to do a good job but if things end up a few millimetres off, this is within the tolerances of our equipment, so if real precision on trim is important to you, please have your framer do it.

  • How do I print A5s?

We do offer A5 printing, but because A4 is the smallest sheet size our printers can physically handle making an order is a slightly different process than normal.

Basically it involves setting up A4 print files with two images per page, we'll then guillotine those down for you free of charge after printing.

Please see our guide to setting up A5 print files before proceeding, particularly regards the specific margins for A5. Also note that on the orders page you need to enter how many A4 sheets you’ll use – i.e. one A4 sheet for each pair of A5 prints. This means that they must be ordered in pairs, and are charged as such.

  • How do I print an A1?

We don't print on A1 as a sheet, they are printed on a 24” roll as a 24x35”.

For most people’s purposes a 24x35” is a close enough approximation to A1, however, if you need a true A1 print (23.4x33.1”) then this will need to be trimmed down from a 24x35”. See our notes on trimming above.

  • Do you offer a true/advanced black and white mode?

Yes, we can use a special mode to print black and white files to give you the best, most neutral possible print outcome for your black and white prints. If you are sending us true black and white files, please make note of this in your order notes or best of all - put something in the file name to indicate true black and white files.

See this article for specifics and pros & cons of the process.

If your files are not explicitly identified as ‘true black and white’ or to ‘use advanced black and white mode’, they will be printed using our standard colour mode.

  • How do I send my files to you?

The easiest way is to Send Us Files through our File Uploader.

Click on the link and simply upload your files. You will receive confirmation once they have been uploaded.

We will also accept most file sharing services with a publicly accessible download link, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, WeTransfer etc.

    IMPORTANT:

Sending us files will not trigger any action at Image Science.

You MUST make a corresponding Print Order or Contact Us with an enquiry.

  • Do you provide ICC profiles so I can soft proof my images prior to printing?

We are happy to provide ICC profiles for each of our papers that you can use to accurately soft proof your images before printing. We provide these on request, so please Contact Us with what paper/s you are wanting profile/s for.

For each paper we generally supply a separate profile for Colour and Black & White.  The colour profile is used by default (we only use the black and white profiles below if you explicitly ask us to do so when you make your order).

Note: These profiles are for soft proofing purposes only - do not convert your images into these profiles when supplying them for printing - leave them in your RGB working space (e.g. sRGB, AdobeRGB etc).

ICC profiles can be a bit tricky to understand at first and take experience to understand fully. Just trust the process and if you see anything strange let us know.  (If you turn on 'simulate paper colour and ink black' in Photoshop (and we recommend that you don't) - you will experience Photoshop's thoroughly broken contrast proofing system, and we suggest that you ignore most of what it is telling you).

For more detailed instructions and explanation on the above read our notes on how to use our profiles - click here.

  • Do you offer test printing?

At Image Science all test prints are treated exactly the same as any standard print order. We use the same fine art papers and print on them at the same quality, with the same archival pigment inks. They also require the same handling (all our prints are individually fed into our printers and individually inspected for flaws).

This might sound strange for what is just a ‘test,’ but it’s precisely the point. It’s a 100% proof, or guarantee, of how your image/s will print on your selected paper.

This also means that all testing here is for your purposes only - we needn’t even be informed that what you’re printing is a test (unless you’re after advice, in which case don’t hesitate to get in touch!).

All test prints follow our standard printing rates, file preparation, order & upload process. Note if you’re not confident in Photoshop we provide a basic file setup service for $5 per file.

  • How to get the highest quality print?

It starts long before the ink hits the paper. To achieve gallery-worthy results, every step of your workflow—from file preparation to paper selection—needs to be calibrated for precision. First, ensure your images are high-resolution (ideally at least 300ppi at final print size) and saved in a non-compressed format like TIFF. Second, use a calibrated monitor to edit, so what you see is what actually prints. The next crucial step is choosing a professional printing studio that uses archival-grade papers and pigment-based inks—these materials ensure vibrant colours, deep blacks, and long-lasting durability. At Image Science, we go a step further by offering personalised media recommendations, expert colour management, and state-of-the-art printing technology to ensure your work is printed exactly as intended. If you care about accuracy, longevity, and visual impact—cutting corners is not the way. Quality prints come from quality processes, and that’s where we shine.

  • Do you offer a print embossing service?

Yes, we offer a print embossing service (also known as a ‘print chop’ or print marking). You can have your prints embossed with the Image Science Mark or your own custom design.

Print embossing can be used as an alternative to signing if you would like to send your prints directly to your clients.

If you are interested in having a custom embossing stamp made or want more information, click here.

  • How will my prints be packed and shipped?

We take great care in packing your prints to ensure they get to you safely. All sheet prints are individually placed in an archival clear bag and sent out to you packed flat.

Anything larger than A2, e.g. roll prints, are wrapped in archival clear film and sent in a mailing tube. Sending prints rolled in a mailing tube provides better protection against damage while travelling. Allow your prints to lay flat for a few days before use or framing.

Everything we send out is fully insured and if damaged will be re-printed and sent to you free of charge (once evidence of damage is received).

  • Do you keep my images on file after they have been printed?

We keep your images on file for approximately 3 months in our printing archive, after which they are deleted. If you require a reprint of a file within 3 months of the initial print, just place a new order with the details of the file - there is no need to re-send.

If you are going to be completing edition runs of your images, we do provide a free secure store and print service. We store your digital files here and print your images as you need them. This means that you don’t need to print your complete edition run at once and can be confident that each print is a perfect reproduction of the last. It also provides a handy off site backup for your files.

For more information on our store and print service and edition runs, see here.

  • How should I handle my inkjet prints after they have been printed?

Inkjet prints are beautiful and versatile; however they can be delicate and need to be handled appropriately. The basic rule is; don’t touch the inked area and ideally always use gloves.

We have a general fine art print handling guide,  and a more detailed article which includes information on coating, spotting, trimming, packing and storage.

  • Can I paint/work over my fine art prints?

Yes you can, but we do suggest that you test the particular medium on a sample print to see the results. We generally recommend acrylics as our pigment inks are water based, and therefore it's probably better to stick to water based materials, but we have also seen oils being used with success.

There is no guarantee about the archival longevity of your piece after painting on it, as chemical reactions can occur such as yellowing, but experimenting is all part of the fun!

  • How should I describe these prints to my clients/customers?

These fine art prints are best called Pigment Ink on Archival Paper. They are also commonly referred to as Giclee prints.

    See our article here.

  • How large can I print my files?

You can often print your files a lot bigger than you realise - don't worry too much about the classic 300PPI figure as that's really a bit out of date these days. We have printed many large prints at much lower figures, like 150 PPI, and they've held up very well.

Remember, pin sharp images are not always that important when it comes to overall aesthetic - much more important is composition, message and expression, so don't let lack of resolution stop you from making a huge print if that's what works for the image.

You can actually send us files at any PPI and our printing system will re-sample them automatically to our printer's resolution (and do so at least as well as those expensive plugins like Genuine Fractals etc.).

For more information, read our Resolution for really sharp prints knowledge base article.

  • Can I print multiple images on a roll print & cut down to individual images?

You certainly can print multiple images together as one roll print if you wish - just lay out your file and whitespace however you like - the printable area is all yours to use as you see fit (we suggest you use our templates to make sure your images remain in the printable zone).

However, we do not offer complex trimming (i.e. multiple images from a roll print, or things precise or exotic) as a service. You will want to get your framer to use their more precise tools for this sort of work

We do not recommend printing lots of smaller prints this way - trimmed roll prints will exhibit a significant amount of paper curl.  When roll prints are large, the weight of the paper works against the paper's memory effect and so the prints sit fairly flat - however when you cut down roll prints to small sections, the full curl of the paper is expressed and it can be substantial.  So if you're aiming for smaller print, sheet prints are usually well worth the extra cost.

  • Can I supply my own media for you to print on?

Yes, you can also supply your own paper for us to print on. Your media must be compatible with our printer, (inkjet, coated, for waterbased inks - not solvent based) and we will need at least 2x A2 sized sample pages (or a 24" roll) to produce an accurate setup for your paper before we can do the printing job. This process can take up to 1 week so please ensure you add this to our current printing turn around time.

Pricing for your prints will be 10% lower than our standard printing prices as you are supplying the media. Contact us to discuss printing on your own media in more detail and to obtain a quote for your particular media setup and job.

  • Do you have any suitable materials for printing wallpaper or decals?

We print on a self adhesive polyester fabric called Ilfotex, which is perfect for all things signage, wallpapers, decals and wraps. The adhesive is non marking, removable, and very re-usable. Ilfotex has a smooth surface and produces sharp printing results.

Prints are only available on a 42 inch roll and can be printed up to a maximum length of 3 metres. Pricing is charged at $60 per half running metre.

  • Can I have my prints sent directly to my customers?

We can send prints directly to your customers. Just add their details into the shipping address in the cart and make a note to send directly to your customer.

  • What is an archival quality print?

Archival quality printing refers to the process of producing prints that are designed to last for decades—if not centuries—without noticeable fading, discolouration, or deterioration. This is achieved by combining acid-free, museum-grade papers with pigment-based inks, both of which are rigorously tested for longevity and stability under various environmental conditions. Archival prints are not just about beauty—they’re about permanence. Whether you're an artist selling limited edition works, a photographer preparing a gallery show, or an illustrator creating heirloom-quality pieces, archival printing ensures your vision stands the test of time. At Image Science, we only use industry-trusted materials from brands like Hahnemühle, Canson, and Ilford, alongside precision-calibrated workflows, so that every print we produce is not just visually stunning—but made to last.

We create fine art, archival prints up to 110cm wide, by almost any length, printed with state of the art colour management using the latest and best Epson printers and inks. We've been offering fine art printing services for over 20 years and so have more experience to draw on than any other service in the country.

Our service is perfect for anyone who wants beautiful prints of their photographs, artwork or illustrations. Not only are we the only Hahnemuhle Platinum Certified Studio in Australia, but we were the first lab in Australia to be certified by both Hahnemühle and Ilford as fine art printing experts.

  • Are archival quality prints worth it?

Absolutely—especially if you're serious about the quality, longevity, and value of your work.  Unlike mass-produced prints, giclée / archival prints deliver superior colour fidelity, exceptional detail, and a museum-quality finish that can last 80–200+ years without fading when properly cared for. This level of craftsmanship justifies higher pricing—not only because of the materials and technology involved, but because of the perceived value it creates for buyers and collectors. For artists, photographers, and illustrators looking to build a brand based on quality and professionalism, giclée / archival printing isn’t an expense—it’s an investment in your reputation and long-term success.

  • What about print alignment and skewing?

Please note: Print perfection and absolute perfect alignment and squareness is nearly impossible with heavy fine art materials, as they can shift slightly as they run through the printer. Slight skewing of the print on the page/roll may and can occur, and therefore some final trimming of your print may be necessary (it's usually not more than a few millimetres). We strongly recommend you leave more than the minimum amount of required whitespace around the edges to facilitate this (eg. 2cm or more of whitespace).

A note on canvas: as canvas is a woven material that is not fully dimensionally stable it will stretch and shrink as it moves through the printer, while we can compensate for this to a degree, it means the length down the roll can vary slightly from the exact file size, so we recommend leaving extra whitespace in the 'length down the roll' direction to account for this. Once canvas is stretched over stretcher bars this discrepancy reduces also. In addition you should always have stretcher bars cut/made to suit the print once you have it, and not the other way around.
