How To Prepare Files

Setting Up Files

Basic File Specs

Use Adobe Lightroom?

We have a handy guide that shows you how to easily export print ready files from Adobe Lightroom.

Prepare files in Lightroom

Your files should be sent through to us in a print ready form using the specs below:

  • RGB, not CMYK.   (You can work in any RGB colour space you like (= ICC profile) just make sure you attach it!)
  • JPG or Flattened TIFF files - important, this means no extra layers & no alpha channels!
(N.B. must be without art-boards, and in 8 or 16 bit only (i.e. no 32 bit / HDR files please))
  • 360 PPI is ideal (...but you can supply at any PPI you prefer)
  • File size tags MUST be correctly set to dimensions to be printed
  • (Ideally, use our templates - see below!)

Please note: When sizing your image it is best to place it on a canvas the physical size of the print you have requested.  Our templates below make this easy!

N.B. We are unable to print to the edge of the paper so please keep this in mind when creating your files and use our print templates to ensure your image is within the printable area.  If you have any issues using the print templates (i.e. you don't have access to Photoshop/Elements) - then just make sure you prepare things such that your actual imaged area within your canvas stays within the printable area dimensions as listed below.

Basic Print Set-up Service

If you don't have the time, equipment or the knowledge - leave it to us!

For any simple layouts (one or two images on a page), we can set up your files for print for only $5 per layout. To add this service to your order simply check the box "Add basic file set-up" on the online order form and provide clear and precise information on the dimensions and whitespace requirements in the notes section.

If you have any more complex layouts, these will come under our re-touching services as detailed here.

Templates and Printable Area Guidelines

Sheet Prints

Use our sheet printing service if you would like prints no larger than A2 in size. You can choose to print on A4, A3, A3+ or A2 sheets. (Our templates also show you how to prepare two A5s for printing on an A4 page).  You can also prepare A5s for printing as 2-ups A4 sheets - see our specific setup guide to A5s.

Make sure you check the Fine Art Paper Availability table on the print ordering page to make sure the paper you want is available at the size you want.

Ideally, please use our templates to ensure you keep within the printable area guides. The guides will be visible in our templates when opened in Photoshop or Affinity (Photo & Designer), or in theory, any other .PSD compatible software).  With Photoshop, make sure you have View->Extras ticked, and under the View->Show submenu that Guides is ticked.  With Affinity, View->Show Guides needs to be ticked.   Also, when using our templates, use 'Save As' to save your image, do NOT use the Photoshop export dialogue - this is where a lot of folks make mistakes.  Make sure you tick 'embed profile' when you save.

While we try to check all files are correctly prepared, it is your responsibility to supply correctly prepared files.  E.g. if you do prepare your files with an image outside of the printable area, some unexpected scaling/clipping may occur.

The Printable Area For:

  • A4 is 26.6 by 20.3cm (10.5 by 8 inches)
  • A3 is 39.1 by 28.9cm (15.4 by 11.4 inches)
  • A3+ is 45.7 by 30.4cm (18 by 12 inches)
  • A2 is 55.8 by 40.6cm (22 by 16 inches)

24 & 44 Inch Roll Prints

If you want prints larger than standard A2, you will need to use our roll printing service. You can choose prints on either 24 inch (61cm) rolls or 44 inch (111.7cm) rolls.

Make sure you check the Fine Art Paper Availability table on the print ordering page to make sure the paper you want is available at the size you want.

Please use our templates to ensure you keep within the printable area guides and that you include any required white space around the outside of your images when setting up your files - this will not be added to your prints automatically. While we try to check all files are correctly prepared, if you do prepare your files with an image outside of the printable area, some scaling/clipping may occur.

  • For 24 inch prints, the safe printing area is 57cm (22.5 Inches)
  • For 44 Inch prints, the safe printing area is 107cm (42.1 Inches)

Please note: Print perfection and absolute perfect alignment at the very edges of roll prints is impossible with heavy fine art materials. Slight edge marks and/or skewing of the print on the page may occur, and therefore some final trimming of your print may be necessary (it's usually not more than a few millimetres). We strongly recommend you leave 2cm or more of whitespace around the edges.

PhotoTex Prints

PhotoTex prints are only available on a 42 inch roll and are printed in half metre increments up to a maximum length of 3 metres.

  • For 42 Inch prints, the safe printing area is 100cm (39.4 Inches)

Black and White Prints

We use a special mode to print black and white files to give you the best possible print outcome. If you are sending us true black and white files, please make note of this in your order notes or best of all - put something in the file name to indicate true black and white files.

If your files are not explicitly identified as true black and white they will be printed using our standard colour mode.

Trim Lines

We offer a basic trimming service (that is, trimming of single images to size (i.e we don't offer trimming services where multiple images must be trimmed out of a larger print), for $5 per print.

However, we do require you to add crop marks/trim lines to your prints if you would like to use this service - we do not just accept instructions like 'trim 3cm off the left' as this takes significant extra time and we tend to be very busy here, and it also avoids any chance of mis-interpretation of your instructions.

We suggest using a faint grey stroke line for the lines you want trimmed.

To action this service, just add trims to your print using the online order form.

ICC Profiles

You can use ICC profiles to soft-proof your images before printing. Read more about this process and download the ICC profiles below.
