If you're new to colour accurate monitors, start here to know what to look for, and why.
Monitors have become the single most important tool in the modern imaging workflow.
We've worked hard to become Australia's high end, colour accurate monitor experts.
We're the only company to carry all the major brands in this area - Eizo and BenQ, and we have developed excellent relationships with all of these companies.
We are well known to offer unbiased advice on all brands, and love to sit down and help our clients make the right investment in what has become perhaps the single most important tool in the modern imaging workflow.
We're based in Melbourne, but we supply (and just as importantly, support ) - colour accurate monitors to image makers all over the country.
These monitors are the Best of the Best for imaging work. If you really love colour, want unparalleled accuracy, and ease of use, then these are the monitors for you. They offer unsurpassed performance with still image work, and are also perfect devices for transitioning into high end video work as well.
These Eizo CG monitors have fully automatic direct hardware calibration and an inbuilt full calibration sensor. We have extended evaluation articles on both the CG2700S and CG2700X. The Eizo CG2700X is set to become the industry standard high end monitor - offering Eizo's unparalleled accuracy and support, with 4K, HDR and a spiffy new design, it really is the best of the best.
You can set these an Eizo CG monitor once (takes about 10 minutes if you know what you're doing, perhaps an hour if you're new to things)....and then sit back and enjoy your monitor for the next 5+ years as it self-calibrates with absolutely no further user intervention required. It can even do this magical self-calibration in the middle of the night so it doesn't interrupt your workflow!
Monitors simply doesn't come any better, or easier to use, than Eizo CG monitors.
We've also included here BenQ's best model, as we know there are
those seeking a larger monitor, but at a more reasonable price. Not
quite in the same league as the Eizo CGs, but still very very good -
certainly the best BenQ has produced to date (early 2023).
We have an extended evaluation of the BenQ SW321C.
If these are out of your price range, have a look below at the Eizo CS2740 - it offers a great deal of the quality of the CG models, particularly for still image work, for a considerably lower price tag.
While Eizo's ColorEdge CG monitors continue to set the standard by which all other monitors are judged, most people will find a model from Eizo's ColorEdge CS or BenQ's SW ranges a great choice for general imaging work - particularly if you're primarily or only doing still image work.
BenQs are priced very competitively, and BenQ's new models for 2023 (SW272U and SW272Q) - are quite simply just wonderful – very competitive in quality with the Eizo models, and distinctly cheaper.
We strongly suggest adding a compatible calibrator and with BenQ SW series this really means the Calibrite Display Pro HL.
The Eizo CS models are what they call their 'entry level' ColorEdge models. But 'entry level' here really means 'as good as the best from any other brand, but not quite as good as the very best from Eizo'!
They are very similar to the once legendary NEC PA, and currently popular BenQ SW models - but noticeably just that bit more refined - most noticeable in deep shadows and the quality of neutral tones, and the extremely refined software for calibration.
They come with Eizo's calibration software (ColorNavigator) included, and with two years extra warranty over the BenQ, so they offer great value - you just need to add a calibrator and you've got everything you need for professional level still image work.
We have comprehensive evaluations of:
On a budget or just getting to that level where you want a significant improvement over your typical desktop monitors from office brands like Dell, Apple etc?
If Photography is your primary use for the monitor, then we generally recommend you stick to the BenQ SW series (e.g. SW272Q above is the best value photography model on the marker right now) - these are specifically designed for photographers and other professional visual artists.
For photographic and image editing work, there is simply be no other monitor to touch the BenQ SW242Q in terms of combination of quality, features and value. Given the BenQ SW242Q's smaller size, and affordable price, this model also makes a perfect cheaper option for your second monitor, or a dedicated monitor for tethered studio shooting or on location work.
Again, we have an evaluation of the SW242Q.
You could also consider the PD Designer series, if your usage is more general purpose with a bit of photography thrown in, and you're just after something with significantly better (more accurate) colour than normal monitors. We have a dedicated page for the BenQ DesignVue series.
These are very popular for things like CAD/CAM, Architectural pre-visualisation, marketing / website work, and graphic design work. Of course all of those, at the top level, will benefit from the monitors mentioned above, but for a lot of these work the BenQ PD models are a perfect solution, with excellent performance and an office friendly price point.
It doesn't hurt that the PD models look so lovely, too!
