Week 2: Maggie the Magpie

Carmen's Story: Maggie the Magpie

I have always been drawn towards Australian native flora and fauna. Recently I have been reading a lot on Australian birds and am in awe of their intelligence and their ability to adapt and survive in a country that can be quite harsh and hostile to animals and wildlife.

When I finished Maggie the Magpie I did a call out and asked people to send me a story they have with this iconic bird. My mailbox was flooded with fond memories of them feeding the bird mince, and beautiful stories such as mamma Magpie bringing her babies to meet the family after a long absence. A man I met at a market even got emotional while telling me about their significance and what magpies meant to him and the Aboriginal culture.

I love how a simple drawing can have the ability to bring out memories and emotions in a wide variety of people. I hope this print will bring out some fond memories for you as well.

This print, along with many others, is available to purchase from Carmen's website
