Rhiannon Slatter is a photographer that has been working within the Architecture and Interior industries for over 10 years now. This commercial work has lead into inspiration for her latest personal project ‘Concrete’.
‘Concrete’ features large scale images that use multiple photographs overlaid to show abstraction of the structural form – something that Rhiannon has always been interested in. Rhiannon’s style of photography has created a beautiful compelling subject out of the “bland, functional, nondescript” concrete structure.
We have proudly supported Rhiannon’s exhibition, alongside Ilford Australia, with each image printed on the beautiful new Ilford Galerie Smooth Cotton Rag – a incredibly beautiful, ultra smooth fine art rag. The large scale images looked amazing as they were being printed and can’t wait to see them as they take over the gallery space at C3 Contemporary in Abbotsford on April 13th. ‘Concrete’ is open until May 8th so definitely set aside some time to have a look.
Education and background:
RMIT BA (Photography) 2001. I have been working as an architecture/interiors photographer for over 10 years.

15 years (very sporadically, in-between commercial work but wanting to make this a bigger part of my practice now).
What do you feel is your biggest achievement to date?
Creating a career doing the work I love so much.

Edward Burtynsky, Andreas Gursky, Rosalie Gascoigne, Jeffrey Smart.
What camera/equipment do you use?
Phase One and Canon.
Describe your photographic style and how it has changed over the years:
I have always been interested in the abstraction of structural form in my personal work, using multiple photographs overlaid in various ways to create the final image.
Over time my interest has become increasingly focussed on the built environment and industrial subject matter, more informed by the architectural projects I photograph commercially and which I draw inspiration from. It is a style which has been consistent but has become increasingly refined and hopefully will become more so as time goes on.
Tell us a little about your upcoming exhibition:
My upcoming exhibition ‘Concrete’ at C3 Contemporary Art Space is a series of large scale prints, representing both an extension of and departure from my architectural photography.
I have always been fascinated by scales of production in industry, by the world we live in where so much can be made and moved around so quickly and efficiently.
The concrete structures in this series represent large scale, fast construction methods themselves while also serving as containers for industrial production.
They appear frequently in our landscape and continue to multiply. They are bland, functional, nondescript; but to me they have a strange kind of beauty, repeatedly materialising around me as I pass through outer suburbs, usually on my way to somewhere else. So instead of driving by I have made them my destination, making a photographic study of their simple, austere shapes and rough textures.
The stark geometric outlines and solid bulk of these buildings have driven me to further abstraction. By overlaying photographs of these mundane yet compelling structures I have worked to build compositions that have an architecture of their own. The finished images are highly designed with the placement of every line and angle being considered at length and manipulated in an effort to achieve relational concord.
A selection of my Concrete images will be exhibited as part of Head On Photo Festival at Gaffa Gallery, 281 Clarence St, Sydney from 12-23 May 2016.
