Printing From iPhoto Using Profiles

While most profile's are used with explicitly ICC aware applications like Photoshop, you can use profiles with application without the option of specifically choosing a profile in the printing dialogue.

Here are some notes on using profiles with iPhoto. This method should be the same for all applications on a Mac, in principle. Incidentally, you can follow much the same approach on the PC by associating a profile for a printer in the 'colour management' tab of the printer properties.

How to print in iPhoto using an ICC Profile
  • Firstly, on your Mac, under System Preferences, you will find the system level color management utility - Colorsync. Save your printer profile here.
  • To print from iPhoto, go to the 'Quality & media' print setup, chose the relevant paper setting ie. matte photo paper, and detailed setting at the maximum possible. In 'Color options' select 'Colorsync'. Save these settings as something easy to remember such as 'Canson Photosatin Colorsync'.
  • Next, open the print option and select the custom 'Canson Photosatin Colorsync' setting that you just created. The output appeared indistinguishable from the Photoshop output.
 
 
 

Got them today and they look great, thanks. Astro-photos are tricky to print well and Image Science does it better than anybody else I have tried.
